How We Use It
Our typical workflow is straightforward. We edit the reel in Premiere Pro or Final Cut, export it, and upload it to Submagic for captioning. The AI transcribes the audio, generates word-by-word captions, and lets us pick from a library of caption styles and animations. We review the transcript, make any corrections, choose the visual style, and export. The whole process from upload to captioned export usually takes two to three minutes.
For a studio producing reels regularly, that speed matters. Manual captioning in a timeline editor is tedious and error-prone, especially when you're working with natural speech that includes pauses, filler words, and overlapping audio. Submagic handles all of that automatically and gets it right the vast majority of the time.
What Works Well

- Speed: Captioning that used to take 20 minutes now takes under 3. When you're producing volume, that time savings is substantial.
- Style templates: The caption templates look good and are customizable enough to match different brand aesthetics. The animated word-by-word styles are engaging without being distracting.
- Simple interface: The platform is intuitive. Upload, review, style, export. No learning curve to speak of.
The Downsides
Here's where we have to be real. Submagic's add-on pricing gets costly, especially when you're producing a high volume of reels. The base subscription covers a set number of exports, but features like removing the watermark, accessing premium templates, or exporting in higher quality often require add-ons or a higher tier. When you're cranking out reels for multiple clients and your own channels, those costs start to feel like nickel-and-diming. It adds up faster than you'd expect.
The other frustration we've hit is that Submagic sometimes fails to save caption edits. You'll go through the transcript, correct a word or adjust timing, and when you go to export, the changes haven't stuck. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often enough that we've learned to double-check before exporting. When you're moving fast through a batch of reels, having to redo edits because they didn't save is a real workflow disruption.
Neither of these issues is a dealbreaker, but they're worth knowing about before you commit, especially if you're planning to use the tool at scale.
Pricing Concerns
Submagic's pricing tiers are reasonable on the surface. The issue is that the features many professionals consider essential, like watermark-free exports, sit behind higher tiers or add-ons. If you're a solo creator posting a few reels a month, the base plan is fine. If you're a studio producing 15 to 20 captioned reels a month across multiple accounts, the cost climbs and starts to feel disproportionate to what you're getting. We'd like to see more generous export limits on the mid-tier plans.

Submagic is a good tool with real caveats. The caption accuracy and speed are genuinely best-in-class for auto-captioning, and if you're producing social media reels regularly, it will save you meaningful time. But the add-on costs can feel aggressive at volume, and the occasional failure to save edits is a frustration that hasn't been fully resolved. We still use it and recommend it, but go in with clear expectations about pricing and always double-check your edits before exporting.
